<p>Hay making apparatus (10) is disclosed which comprises a tractor mountable support member (12) which supports two arm assemblies (14) above the ground. Each arm assembly comprises an inner arm (32) pivotably mounted on the support member, and an outer arm (30) pivotably mounted on the inner arm and carrying at its outer end a tyre-like, tyne-carrying rotor (16) driven by a hydraulic motor (22). A ram (72) and chains (74, 76) are provided for moving the arms between a folded position in which the rotors are relatively close to one another and an expanded position in which the rotors are further apart. The rotors rotate about substantially vertical axes (24). The support member is mounted athwart the tractor and the length of the support member is close to the width of the tractor. The length of the inner arms is close to half of the length of the support member. In the folded position the outer arm is folded against the inner arm and the inner arm is folded against the support member in a Z configuration. When the arms are moved to the expanded position, the outer arms are initially held folded against the inner arms but subsequently fold away from the inner arms. In the expanded position each rotor is substantially in alignment with, or forward of, the support member. Hydraulic rams (92) support each end of the support member. Each ram (92) is connected in parallel with each hydraulic motor so that if the motor encounters an obstacle the consequent increase in hydraulic pressure causes the ram (92) to lift the end of the support member at which the motor is located. A dished plate (130) mounted on the rotor is in sliding contact with the ground as the rotor rotates. A spring (132) is mounted between the dished plate and the motor and reduces the apparent weight of the rotor.</p> |
