5-Cyano-4-methyl-2-thiazolone prepn. - from beta-amino-crotononitrile and chloro:carbonyl-sulphenyl chloride

Prepn. of 5-cyano-4-methyl-2-thiazolone (I) is carried out by reacting beta-aminocrotononitrile (II) with ClCOSCl (III) in a non-benzenoid polar aprotic solvent (IV), opt. in the presence of a cosolvent. The reaction is effected by reacting (II) with (III) in the solvent at -20 to +30 (pref. -10 to +20) deg.C and then heating the mixt. to 80-150 (pref. 100-140)deg.C. (I) is useful as a pesticide or a pesticide intermediate. The process gives higher yields than prior art processes (cf. DE2302844).
