THREE-DIMENSIONAL DISPLAY

PURPOSE: To raise the resolution of the display of a 2D mode in a three- dimensional 3D display provided with an automatic three-dimensional mode and the 2D mode. CONSTITUTION: An automatic three-dimensional display is provided with first and second space light modulators 2 and 4 and images from the space light modulators are combined by a beam combiner before being presented in an observation area. The relative positions of the first and second space light modulators 2 and 4 are controlled so as to arrange the picture elements of the second space light modulator 4 between the picture elements of the first space light modulator 2. By such arrangement, when the space light modulators are operated so as to generate two-dimensional images instead of three- dimensional images, the resolution is effectively doubled.
