发明名称 LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY ELEMENT
摘要 PURPOSE: To eliminate the orientation defect and to enable stable an intermediate display by specifying the orientation twisting direction of upper and lower substrates by taking the code of the spontaneous polarization of a liquid crystal material and the direction where oriented films force this spontaneous polarization direction into consideration. CONSTITUTION: Transparent ITO electrodes 2a, 2b and the oriented films 3a, 3b are formed respectively on the opposed surfaces of a pair of the glass substrates 1a, 1b and the liquid crystal layer 5 consisting of the liquid crystal material exhibiting a chiral smectic C phase or CA phase is disposed between the oriented films 3a and 3b. The spontaneous polarization exhibited by the liquid crystal material is negative (or positive) and the oriented films 3a, 3b have the nature to force the direction of the spontaneous polarization inward (or outward). The orientation direction of the oriented films when the liquid crystal layer 5 is viewed from the side of the one oriented film is twisted by 5 deg. with the normal direction of the liquid crystal polymer layer and by the intrinsic tilt angle of the liquid crystal molecules plus 10 deg. in the left direction with respect to the normal direction of the liquid crystal molecule layers. The orientation direction of the other oriented film is twisted by 5 deg. and the tilt angle plus 10 deg. in the right direction with respect to the normal direction of the liquid crystal molecule layer.
