PROCESS FOR FINISHING ANIMAL HIDES OR PELTS

In order to obtain a process for preparing animal hides or pelts that is less labour intensive and more environmentally friendly, animal hides or pelts soaked in a conventional manner are treated with a conventional tanning solution in which carbon dioxide is dissolved under pressure. This significantly reduces the duration of the treatment and shortens the time usually required to produce leather or pelts. In addition, conventional treatment steps may be united in a single treatment step. Instead of the usual 20 to 40 tons waste water produced in conventional processes per ton of leather or pelts, only 2 tons of waste water are still produced per ton of leather or pelts. Besides having a considerably reduced environmental impact, this process is significantly more economical in comparison with conventional processes because of a considerably shorter total processing time.
