A planar elastomeric layer located between operating buttons and circuitry in a telephone base. The layer has button actuated regions which project above the plane of the layer to different heights so as to compensate for a change in distance of the outer surface of the telephone base whereby buttons of equal heights project for equal heights from that surface. The inventive concept is useful when requiring, for instance, a convex or concave outer surface to the base, but while still requiring the simple planar concept for the elastomeric layer.
