Date Apr. 29, 1993A rotary electric machine of an inner rotor type includes a hollow stator having multiple field magnets, each having a magnetic pole, arranged in a spaced relationship along a circumferential direction on an inner surface of the stator such that all inward-facing magnetic poles of the field magnets have the same polarity. A cylindrical rotor is arranged concentrically inside the stator such that a gap separates the rotor from the stator. The rotor has multiple magnetic pole generators, each comprising a rotor winding wound on a core, arranged in a spaced relationship along a circumferential direction on a outer surface of the rotor such that the magnetic pole generators oppose, and are separated by the gap from, the field magnets on the inner surface of the stator. A commutator mechanism is arranged to alternately excite and suspend excitation of the rotor windings of the magnetic pole generators such that (A) the magnetic pole generators have a same polarity as that of the field magnets when a first repulsive force received from a field magnet on a rear side in a forward rotational direction of the rotor is greater than a second repulsive force received from another field magnet on a front side in the forward rotational direction, and (B) the magnetic pole generators have no polarity when the first repulsive force received becomes less than or equal to the second repulsive force.
