The veneer splicer has a sheet conveyor defining a feed path and sensors to detect an irregular end of a first sheet to produce a trailing end cutting signal and an irregular leading end of a second sheet to produce a leading end cutting signal. A cutting tool (11) is provided above the feed path to cut respective veneer (1) sheets in response to relevant signals. A feed passes thermoplastic adhesive along the feed path. Cold pressing surfaces (16) are carried by the cutting tool to slide w.r.t. it toward and away from the splicing line.
