PURPOSE: To provide a novel color developing agent incorporable in the photosensitive material and to provide the silver halide photographic sensitive material enabled to form an image in a simple and rapid manner by incorporating it in the material. CONSTITUTION: This photosensitive material contains in a hydrophilic colloidal layer formed on a support the color developing agent represented by the general formula in which R<1> is an alkyl or aryl or heterocyclic group or the like; each of X<1> and X<3> and X<5> is an H atom or a nitro, cyano, alkylsulfonyl, arylsulfonyl, or the like; each of X<2> and X<4> is same as X<1> , X<3> , and X<5> , but the sum of the Hammett's substituent constants ofσp values of X<1> , X<3> , and X<5> and those ofσm values of X<2> and X<4> amounts to 1.50-3.80.
