PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the resolution by providing a black-and-white signal LCD and a color signal LCD and superposingly projecting the black-and-white signal and the color signal. SOLUTION: In the state where no light loss is generated, the S-wave separated by a PBS 32 is reflected by the PBS 32, passes through the first condensing lens 33 and λ/4-wavelength plate 35, and is converted into circularly polarized light. When an LCD is set to on, the circularly polarized light is reflected by the first liquid crystal panel 37, and it again passes through the λ/4 wavelength plate 35. It is sent out in the polarized state by 90 deg. against the incident light axis, and it is converted into the P-wave. The polarized P-wave passes through the PBS 32, and it is projected to a screen S through a projection lens 39. When the LCD is set to off, the incident light is scattered by the LCD and does not reach the projection lens 39. This optical system is constituted of a black-and-white signal LCD and a color signal LCD, two images are superposed on a screen, and one color image is displayed. |
