The rod (9) slides and slews the slat trucks in a horizontal rail and through 180 deg. in each direction. It can be couple to a driving gear in a slat truck so as to drive a gear in the slewing shaft passing through it, but cannot turn on it. The driving gear moves in a curved guide (13) in the truck and round an intermediate gear from one side of the slats to the other. The driving and intermediate gears together form a layshaft drive. The intermediate gear can be coupled via a bevel gear-train to the slewing shaft so as to turn with it. The centre distance between the driving gear and the slewing axis of the slat in the truck can be equal to or less than half the width of the slat.
