In a jam monitoring device for a paper transporting device, the paper is transported between a driving roller (1) and a freely rotating pressure roller (3) whose axis is parallel to the axis of the driving roller (1). A stationary sensor (5, 8) is associated to each roller to monitor separately the speeds of the driving roller (1) and pressure roller (3). An evaluation circuit (7) is provided to compare the signals emitted by time or distance unit by both sensors. The evaluation circuit (7) emits a malfunction signal when the relation between the signals from the sensors (5, 8) deviates from a predetermined relation.
