<p>A lamp socket for receiving an HID lamp is constituted of a casing which has an open end for mounting the lamp and a closed end, an electrode bearing member provided in the casing, a central electrode which is provided on the electrode bearing member in a position aligned with the axis of the casing perpendicular to the lamp mounting opening and brought into contact with the central electric contact of the base of the lamp, a peripheral electrode which is provided in a position out of the axis of the casing and brought into contact with the peripheral electric contact of the base of the lamp, an electrode covering means which is provided in the casing movably between its projection position and retraction position, and biasing means which biases the electrode covering means to the projection position, but allows the covering means to move to the retraction position when the lamp is inserted into the lamp mounting opening. The electrode covering means allows the central and peripheral contacts of the base of the lamp to be incontact with the central and peripheral electrodes when the electrode covering means is in the retraction position, but covers nearly the whole of the central and peripheral electrodes as far as the means is retained in the projection position by the biasing means.</p> |
