In an arrangement for controlling an internal combustion engine by means of a plate-shaped lever 3 which can be actuated by an accelerator pedal via a tensile member 2, counter to the force of a return spring 12, the spring design and mounting are such as to minimise transverse forces on the shaft which supports the lever. The lever is rigidly connected to a drive shaft 4 of a pedal-value transmitter 9 which is rotatably mounted in a transmitter housing 8, the transmitter housing being secured on a bearing bracket 7. In order to reduce the forces on the bearings 5, 6 which support the transmitter drive shaft 4, the return spring 12 is wound in a generally helical form and supported around the drive shaft between the lever 3 and an overhanging portion 10 of the bracket 7 on a cup-shaped member 11, and the line of action of the spring retention arrangement 12a at the bearing-bracket end runs as far as possible parallel and counter to the line of action of the tensile member 2.
