A monoazo compound represented by the general formula (I): <CHEM> wherein D is an optionally substituted phenyl or an optionally substituted naphthyl; R and R<1> are hydrogen or an optionally substituted lower alkyl; A is a naphthylene represented by the general formula (A1): <CHEM> m1 and m2 are 0 or 1; Y is an aliphatic connecting group represented by the general formula (Y1), (Y2) or (Y3): <CHEM> <CHEM> <CHEM> Z is -CH=CH2 or -CH2CH2Z<1> in which Z<1> is a group removable by the action of an alkali; X is a group represented by the general formula (X1), (X2), (X3) or (X4) : <CHEM> <CHEM> -OR<8> -SR<9> and a method for dyeing or printing fiber materials using the monoazo compound.
