PURPOSE: To industrially and advantageously obtain the subject compounds, having antimicrobial actions and useful as a synthetic intermediate, etc., for medicines by reacting specific hexahydrofuro[3,4-d]imidazole-2,4-diones with an alkali metallic xanthate. CONSTITUTION: Hexahydrofuro[3,4-d]imidazole-2,4-diones represented by formula I (R1 is an alkyl, an aryl or an aralkyl) (e.g. cis-1,3-dibenzyl-hexahydrofuro[3,4-d] imidazole-2,4-dione) are reacted with an alkali metallic xanthate represented by formula II (R2 is an alkyl; M is an alkali metal) (e.g. potassium 1- butylxanthate) at 110 deg.C for 4hr to industrially and advantageously afford the objective compounds, represented by formula III, having antimicrobial actions themselves and useful as a synthetic intermediate, etc., for medicines such asα-dehydrobiotin having the antimicrobial actions or trimetaphan camsilate which is a ganglion blocking agent.
