To determine the actual condition of the cylinder internal faces, a measuring head retained on a linear guide and provided with 360 deg. coverage is moved through the cylinder which is fixed to the measurement device. From measurement data transmitted to a computer, an inner face profile having the parameters for the ensuing machining process is determined. The parameters are communicated to the process control of a honing machine for automised provision of a honing run eliminating the deviations between the established actual profile and desired profile of the inner face.
