Mass spectrometer with controlled ancillary voltage source

The mass spectrometer has an ion trap to collect generated ions, a test specimen input stage (2) to introduce a sample into the ion trap, an electron gun (5), a detector (9) for the transmitted ions, a voltage supply (4), a control unit (3) and a mass analyser (10). The ion trap consists of a ring electrode (6) and two end cap electrodes (7,8) to create a region for introduction of the test sample that is exposed to electrons passed through an opening (12) into the trap with the emitted ions being passed out through an opening (13) to be received by the detector. The end cap electrodes are connected to a voltage control unit (11) that is used to control the direction of interesting ion discharge modes from the trap by introducing an oscillatory voltage.
