The method for reducing errors in checking frame formats for a facsimile under a low S/N ratio, comprises the steps of: setting up a modem at a parallel data mode at the time for determining a HDLC signal or a high speed data signal; setting it at a HDLC mode and disabling a training mode; awaiting the modem until an idle status when a fixed level having energy more than turn-on threshold level is detected; searching flags of HDLC frames for received signals through a PSTN for a certain time; checking a flag bit to identify a received signal for the HDLC frame.
