Method for determining the quality of a body (15) of solid material, comprising the following steps: a) generating ultrasound; b) directing said sound through the body (15); c) measuring the sound velocity through the body (15); and d) determining a quality characteristic (Kg; I) on the basis of the measured sound velocity by comparison thereof with an ideal sound velocity or by a statistical analysis. The invention also relates to a device for performing the method.
