Circular knitting machine has an electric drive motor (3) with its stator (5) on the machine framework (1), and its coaxial rotor (4) rigid w.r.t the needle cylinder (2), and pref. formed as a disc. Specifically, the motor (3) is of the multiple-phase synchronous AC type with electronic phase switching, and pref. the stator (5) carries a rotor (4) position detector such as an optical sensor (13) on the stator (5) and a stroboscopic ring (12) on the rotor, or a magnetic sensor on the stator (5) and a magnetic ring on the rotor (4), or a resolver having windings on stator and on rotor.
