In utilisation of sugar beet pulp: (a) the pulp is used after extn. of the saccharose, (b) the pulp is treated with an acid soln. under mild temp. conditions, to solubilise selectively, the pectic fraction of the pulp, (c) the liq. pectic phase is sepd. from the de-pectinised residual solid, (d) the solid phase is treated with a basic soln. under mild temp. conditions, to solubilise the hemicellulose fraction, (e) the hemicellulose liq. phase is sepd. from the residual cellulose solid, and (f) the pectins from stage (c) and the hemicellulose from stage (e) are mixed, to give the required biodegradable prod.
