PURPOSE: To obtain a route guidance system for searching a new optimal route, including the return route, again appropriately in a short time upon deviation from the optimal route. CONSTITUTION: A return route is not searched after a vehicle deviates from an optimal route but searched previously for future possible deviation from the optimal route when the vehicle is traveling on the optimal route. In other words, when a vehicle is traveling along an optimal route (S3), a return route is searched (S4) while assuming deviation from the optimal route and a searched return route is stored (S5). Upon occurrence of actual deviation from the optimal route, a return route corresponding to a deviated road is selected (S7, S8) among the stored return routes and set (S9) as a part of a new optimal path. Since only the return route selection processing is required for searching a return route upon occurrence of actual deviation from the optimal route, the time required for searching the return route can be substantially nullified. |
