PURPOSE: To further reduce a coefficient of thermal expansion of a cordierite sintered body and to produce a material exhibiting excellent resistance to thermal shock when used as a filter material. CONSTITUTION: A thermal expansion of a cordierite crystal is absorbed by a shrinkage of a micro crack 2, and the material is changed to low thermal expansion without deteriorating the resistance to thermal shock by keeping a total length of the micro-crack 2 incorporated in an optional plane of the sintered body consisting essentially of the cordierite in a range of 0.35×10<4> to 4×10<4> μm per 1mm<2> . |
