Geared transmission system for shipboard electrical generator

An electrical generator directly driven by the main propeller shaft of a ship is coupled by a geared transmission in a housing (9) in which a hollow drive-sleeve (3) in shell bearings (5) concentric with the propshaft (1) carries a first-stage spur wheel (7). The propshaft torque is transmitted via a flexible coupling (2) and adapter ring (4) to the drive sleeve (3) and thence via the wheel and pinion train (12,14,15( to the output shaft (16) driving the generator. The coupling (2) is capable of limited self-alignment in the radial, axial and angular directions and damps the effect of propshaft speed changes and oscillatory torque.
