<p>A transurethral needle ablation device (21) comprising a bridge (22) having proximal and distal extremities and having a passage (236) therein extending from the proximal extremity to the distal extremity. A sheath (23) having proximal and distal extremities (42, 43) is secured to the bridge (22) and has a passageway (44) therein in communication with the passage (236) in the bridge. The sheath (23) is sized so that it can enter the urethra and has a length so that when its distal extremity (43) is in the vicinity of the prostate, the proximal extremity (42) is outside the urethra. A disposable needle assembly (26) having proximal and distal extremities is removably mounted in the passage (236) in the bridge (22) and extends through the passageway (44) in the sheath (23). The needle assembly (26) includes at least one needle electrode (101) and an insulating sleeve (91) coaxially disposed on the needle electrode. The proximal extremity of the needle assembly (26) is caused to be moved sideways at an angle with respect to the the longitudinal axis to face the urethral wall. A mechanism is carried by the proximal extremity of the needle assembly (26) and the bridge (22) for causing advancement of the needle electrode (101) and the insulation sleeve (91) thereon through the urethral wall and into the target volume in the tissue of the prostate.</p> |
