The floor surface covering machine carries a roll of matting (4), which has no central axis, in a trough-shaped container (3) joined to the vehicle (2). The roll body can be extended from the trough into a broad level strip (5) which is laid on the floor. The roll is supported on its outer side in the trough by rollers (7,7a,8) which project into the trough. The roll body can also be supported on its outer side by a cushion of air formed inside the trough.
