The method includes a humidifying layer (18) being applied on the surface (14) over a predetermined time and then removed and the surface proceeded to be cleaned by brushing. The humidifying layer is applied in the form of a compress (16) which is projected onto the surface with a vegetable or mineral fibre support material. There is a reinforcing armature core (24) in the compress. The compress is humidified in order to maintain a constant rate of humidity in the humidifying layer. The rate of humidity in the humidifying layer is measured and the compress is supplied with water when the rate is less than a determined value. The compress has a water supply circuit (26) for supplying water and additives.
