Phenolic resins (I) obtd. by reacting bisphenols of formula(II) with aldehydes of formula (III) are new: R<1>, R<2> = H, halogen, 1-8 C alkyl, 5-6 C cycloalkyl; 6-10 C aryl or 7-12 C aralkyl; m = 4, 7 or pref. 5 or 6; X = C; R<3>, R<4> = H or 1-6, pref. 1-4 C alkyl; provided that both R<3> and R<4> = alkyl on at least one X atom and there is at least one free ortho-position per aromatic ring of the mol.; R<5> = H, 1-18 C alkyl, 5-6 C cycloalkyl, 6-120 C aryl or 7-12 C aralkyl.
