The measuring machine has an endless belt (1) formed by multiple parallel wires with equidistant spacing. The wires lie transversely to the direction of motion of the belt. Each wire can rotate about a pivot (2) near one end of the wire. An object (H) on the belt is detected by a video camera (8) placed above the belt. A characteristic of the object is measured and the information on the object stored. This information is used to control release of the free end of the wire so the measured object falls into a container (5) appropriate to its characterisation. The free end of the wire is held by an electromagnet (4). The electromagnet is controlled by the measuring device. When the electromagnet is released the wire is free to fall, allowing the object to fall.
