This surface treatment is applied to forming a coating layer or diffusion layer of vanadium carbide on the surface of a carbon steel for cold forging or press. The carbon steel contains over 3wt.% C. The surface layer is formed by immersion of the carbon steel in a surface treatment solution containing of molten salt composed of boras(Na2B4O7), metal oxides (or oxidant, V2O5) and reducing agent (B4C), and by agitation of the solution at 900 to 1,100deg.C for over 30min. The solution comprises 13 to 25wt.% V2O5, 3 to 8wt.% B4C and the balance of Na2B4O7. The purity of V2O5 and B4C are respectively over 85% and 95%. The vessel for surface treatment is produced by the coating of Al on the inner face of the stainless steel vessel and drying of coating layer at 900=F50deg.C.
