In a computer system into which a plurality of memory packages can be inserted, addition and replacement of data-retaining memory packages in a battery-backup state can be made. The system has a function to minimize the electric power consumed by the backup battery of a memory package when the memory package is additionally mounted into the system, so that the battery does not run out in a short period of time. A memory package can be added or replaced while retaining the data, and the overall capacity of the memory of the system can be changed.
