PURPOSE: To provide an edge extracting device with which edges considered locally and visually more important can be exactly selected just as needed. CONSTITUTION: This device is provided with an edge extracting part 1 for extracting edge information P from an applied image, edge dividing part 2 for dividing the extracted edge information P into plural blocks, edge strength arithmetic parts 3-1, 3-1, ..., 3-n for respectively calculating the average value of the absolute values of strength concerning the edge information in the respective divided blocks, histogram preparing parts 4-1, 4-1, ..., 4-n for preparing histograms HO, H1, ..., Hn concerning the average value and the number of edges for each block, and histogram dividing parts 5-1, 5-1, ..., 5-n for deciding an optimum edge dividing value by dividing the prepared histograms HO, H1, ..., Hn by setting dividing points on the axis of the average value. |
