PURPOSE: To obtain a multicore fiber which is broken little and thin in diameter, small in disorder of a core array, and long in length by arraying and inserting many quartz-based optical fibers into slit through holes of a quartz-based glass plate and obtaining a base material, and heating and fusing one end of the base material and drawing it. CONSTITUTION: A quartz glass plate 10 which has a fixed shape on the whole, has the slit through holes 12 in its length direction. The slit size is made large enough to array many optical fibers to be inserted in parallel. A quartz glass plate 30 is fused to one end of the base material 20 consisting of the quartz glass plate 10 into which the optical fibers are inserted, and a quartz glass pipe 40 is fused to the other end. This quartz glass plate 30 seals one end of the base material 20 and serves as a dummy at the time of drawing. The tubular part 44 of the quartz glass pipe 40 is connected to a vacuum pump and in this state, the tip part on the side of the quartz glass plate 30 is heated, fused, and drawn while sucked from the tubular part 44 to obtain the desired multicore fiber. |
