Security element used as circuit protection element in motor vehicle

The security element has a housing (4) made of heat tolerant resin. It also has a meltable conductor (1) with a connector terminal (2) at both ends which are pushed into the housing (4). The element also has a plastic cover (6). This has symbols which give a nominal current value. The cover is in engagement with an opening in the upper end of the housing (4). The cover has a marking on its inside at a position dependent on the nominal current value. The marking can be detected by a sensor. Preferably the position of the marking in the cover (6) is set such that the nominal current value can be automatically correctly identified when the cover is rotated by 180 degrees.
