PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnet comprising first and second pole pieces having substantially opposing first and second pole faces disposed through an interval and subjected to framing for reducing unevenness in the axis symmetric field. SOLUTION: A first pole face 16 has an axis 42 extending substantially toward a second pole face 18 and a surface area including more than one truncated conical surface. The truncated conical surfaces are arranged substantially coaxially about the axis with the radially adjacent truncated conical surfaces touching each other. According to another embodiment, points on the surface areas separated by the same radial distance from the axis are located at positions separated by a common axial distance from the axis. A graph of these points with respect to the axial distance and the radial distance represents a curve of continuous inclination having more than one reversal of sign.
