PURPOSE: To efficiently obtain a carbonate ester useful as a raw material for polycarbonates, an intermediate for medicines, a solvent, etc., little in by- products in a high yield at a high reaction rate and in a long catalyst life by reacting an alcohol with carbon monoxide and oxygen in the presence of a specific catalyst in a gaseous phase. CONSTITUTION: (B) An alcohol such as methanol is reacted with (C) carbon monoxide and (D) oxygen e.g. at a reaction temperature of 30-200 deg.C in a reaction pressure of the atmospheric pressure to 100kg/cm<2> in a gaseous phase in the presence of (A) a solid catalyst produced by carrying a complex compound [e.g. a compound of the formula: PdCu(R-C5 H3 NO)n Xm Yz (X is an organic or an inorganic ion; Y is an electron-donating ligand; R is H, an alkyl, an alkoxy, a halogen, CN; (m), (n) are 0-2, 2-4, respectively; m+n=4; (z) is 0, 1) containing a platinum group metal (salt), copper and a 2-hydroxypyridine compound on a carrier such as active carbon to obtain the objective carbonate ester. |
