PURPOSE: To easily produce even a large-sized composite material or a composite material of a complex shape with high dimensional precision and to produce a dense silicon carbide-based fiber composite material having high breaking resistance. CONSTITUTION: Porous carbon compacts 1 of a prescribed shape and ceramic fibers 2 are arranged to form a laminated body 3, this body 3 is heated and molten silicon is impregnated. The silicon and carbon are brought into reactive sintering to form a silicon carbide matrix and this matrix is integrated with the ceramic fibers 2. The bulk density and average pore diameter of the porous carbon compacts 1 are preferably regulated to <=1.0g/cm<3> and >=0.5μm, respectively. |
