A steam cracking method and plant using controlled injection of solid particles into a quenching exchanger (3). The particles are injected through 1 to 8 injection lines, slightly upstream from an impinger/diffuser (6) with solid surfaces facing the line for transferring cracked gases to the exchanger. Said impinger/diffuser is located in the inlet cone (2) of the exchanger, it is gas-permeable in that it has a plurality of passages, and it is at least 70 % opaque when seen from the transfer line.
