The device includes a base unit which has an electronic section (4) which is connected to a switched telephone network (1) when an automatic dialling signal actuates a switch (3). The unit has a voltage supply (7). The electronic section has an antenna (6) and radio transceiver (5). A motorist is provided with a mobile telephone which has normal and emergency operating modes. In the emergency mode, an emergency telephone call from the mobile telephone is forwarded by the base unit to the switched telephone network.
