The socket (2) is designed to be installed in portable equipment which incorporates its own internal power supply such as a rechargeable Ni-Cd battery. The plug (3) is fitted to a power cable (42) and terminated with a rectangular projection (41) having a sloping wall (45) for making an electrical connection with a movable contact (20) before the internal battery connection is broken. The movable contact is forced against a fixed contact within the cavity (11) of the socket. It is formed of a pair of rotary elements (22) with contact points (P1,P2) offset in the direction of insertion.
