A double-walled housing, especially for catalytic converters in motor vehicles, has an inner casing (1) and an outer casing (2) that surrounds the inner casing (1) at a distance, approximately concentric therewith, the inner casing (1) and the outer casing (2) fitting together tightly at both faces, the inner casing (1) being held under compressive strain by constrictions of the outer casing (2) at least in the two end regions (4, 5) and the outer casing (2) having impressions (11) in toward the inner casing (1). To produce such a housing the inner casing (1) is formed by rolling a metal sheet in cylindrical or conical form while maintaining a parting line (8), the outer casing (2) is formed by rolling a metal sheet in cylindrical or conical form and joining the two facing edges (6, 7) to form a seam, the inner casing (1) is placed inside the outer casing (2) and the outer casing (2) is plastically deformed inwards at both faces over its entire circumference, so that the inner casing (1) is held under compressive strain, the outer casing (2) being simultaneously or beforehand given impressions (11) directed in toward the inner casing (1).
