A multicolor organic light emitting device (29) employs vertically stacked layers of double heterostructure devices fabricated form organic compounds. The vertical stacked structure is formed on a substrate consisting of a glass base (37) having a transparent coating of ITO (35), or similar metal. The vertical stacked arrangement of three LED double heterostructure devices (20, 21, 22), each fabricated from a suitable organic material, and are forward biased by batteries (30, 31, 32), wherein a current flows from these batteries into anode terminals (40, 41, 42) and eventually to cathode terminal (43). As a result, light is emitted from each of the LED's (20, 21, 22). Stacking is implemented such that the double heterostructure with the longest wavelength is on the top of the stack. This constitutes the device emitting red light on the top with the device having shortest wavelength emitting blue light, on the bottom, and the device emitting green light in the middle of the stack. The top metal layer (26I) is transparent, followed by metal contact layer (26M), both of these layers make up layer (26). Each subsequent layer (26) is separated from the adjacent layer (26) by organic EL layers (20E, 21E, 22E) and hole transporting layers (20T and 22H).
|
