The heat exchanger is used in thermal therapy which involves applying heat to required areas or cools the areas as required. The heat exchanger element (7) is fitted to the outside of an insulating pad (6) which is shaped to cover the area to be treated. The pad is strapped to the patient and is secured by press-fit connections for a simple fitting. The heating elements comprise wire arrays linked to a low voltage supply. Cooling is via narrow bore pipe loops linked to a compact cooling system which incorporates a circulating pump. The heat exchanger can be embedded in the thermal insulation of the pad.
