PURPOSE: To provide a magnetic recording medium excellent in durability over a long time even under any environmental conditions, causing no error over a wide temp. range and having high reproduction output and satisfactory overwriting characteristics. CONSTITUTION: A nonmagnetic layer is formed on a substrate and a magnetic layer is formed on the nonmagnetic layer while the nonmagnetic layer is in a wet state. The nonmagnetic layer contains carbon black having 10-40nm number average particle diameter and 20-100ml/100g DBP oil absorption. The magnetic layer contains carbon black having 110-500ml/100g DBP oil absorption.
