ACTIVE MATRIX LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY ELEMENT

PURPOSE: To provide an active matrix liquid crystal display element which prevents light leakage without degrading an opening rate. CONSTITUTION: The end of a light shielding conductor 40 extending from a scanning electrode line G(i-1) to which the gate electrode of a thin-film transistor 36 connected to an arbitrary pixel electrode 15 is not connected exists in the peripheral part of this gate electrode and the spacing between this TFT 36 and the pixel electrode and a part of a light shielding conductor overlap on each other. Then, the light from a back light is shielded by the light shielding conductor 40 having light shieldability and does not transmit the liquid crystal display element. The light leakage in the spacing in the peripheral part of the TFT 36 is thus prevented and a contrast is improved even if a black mask is not formed.
