The fuel tank (1) is filled through a pipe (5), leading to the bottom of the tank, and is vented through a restrictor (7a) of less than 0.9 mm diameter, a small (2 mm) bore pipe (7), and syphon (8) leading to the open air or a recovery system via a condenser (15) and separating box (9). A pair of large (5 cm) bore de-gassing tubes (2) leads through syphons (3) into the vapour. Liquid separation box (4), from a point (2a) at height (d) below the take-off point (7a) of the small bore vent pipe. A pair of large bore tubes (12) leads from the point (12a) through syphons (13) to the settling tank (14) and separation box (9), connected to the outside air or a recovery system.
