Prepn. of a triazole cpd. of formula (I) comprises reaction of an intermediate cpd. of formula (II) with a triazole salt of formula (III). The triazole salt is added to the intermediate cpd. in multiple additions such that the ratio of the prodn. of the 1H-(1,2,4-triazole) to the 4H-(1,2,4- triazole) is greater than about 13:1. Z = 6-10C aryl, opt. substd. with up to 3 substits. selected from R3; R = H, 1-12C alkyl, 3-8C cycloalkyl, 2-8C alkenyl, 5-8C cycloalkenyl, 2-8C alkenyl, 7-14C aralkyl (opt. substd. with up to 3 substits. selected from R3), 2-4C alkynoxy, 6-10C aryloxy (opt. substd. with up to 3 substits. selected from R3) or hydroxy; R3 = halo, NO2, trihalomethyl, CN, 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, 1-4C alkylthio, 1-4C alkylsulphinyl or 1-4C alkylsulphonyl; Q = 1-(1,2,4-triazolyl) or 4-(1,2,4-triazolyl) both opt. substd. with 2 substits. selected from halogen, 1-4C alkyl, nitro and cyano; X = H or CN; m = 0 or 1; n = 1 or 2; Y = halo, tosyl or mesyl; M = a cation or mixt. of cations; R1, R2 = as for R. Also claimed are processes for the prepn. of (I) by reaction of (II) with (III) in which either (1) (III) is added to (II) in multiple additions such that the yield of the triazole cpd. is improved by greater than about 2% by wt. over the reactions in which (III) is added to the reactor at one time; or (2) (III) is added to (II) in multiple additions such that a yield greater than about 94% is achieved. |
