The alert generation procedure compares the predicted trajectory of the aircraft with terrain data, and generates a warning if they intersect. The terrain data is provided as relief data for a particular geographic coordinate. The terrain data is stored in a finer grid pattern in the vicinity of an airport. If the terrain data includes a landing strip the alarm system is inhibited if aircraft flight variables indicate it is landing. The air speed, altitude, alignment with landing strip and aerodynamic configuration are all monitored to determine whether aircraft is in landing approach
