PURPOSE: To obtain a sorbitol derivative useful for producing a polypropylene resin composition excellent in thermal stability, transparency, malodor and safety. CONSTITUTION: This compound is 1,3-2,4-di(4-methylbenzylidene)sorbitol of the formula. The compound is obtained as a solid substance by reacting sorbitol with 4-methylbenzaldehyde in the presence of a catalyst in an organic solvent, adding an alkaline aqueous solution to the resultant reactional mixture and then distilling away the solvent. The prepared solid substance is purified by sludging thereof with a water-soluble organic solvent, reducing the content of residual metals such as Fe, Ca or Na to <=50ppm, preferably <=200μm. A polypropylene resin composition is obtained by adding 0.01-1.0 pt.wt. compound of the formula to 100 pts.wt. polypropylene resin.
